Drugs for the Treatment of Obesity: Saxenda, Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy
Drugs for the Treatment of Obesity: Saxenda, Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy

Obesity is a important health issue that is increasingly prevalent today and contributes to many chronic diseases. Lifestyle changes (balanced nutrition, regular exercise and regular sleep pattern) are always the first step in weight loss. However, in some patients, these methods alone may not be effective enough. At this point, medications used under medical supervision come into consideration. Effective obesity medications introduced in recent years are used by physicians, and have become an important part of diabetes treatment as well, since they also lower blood sugar.

Below are the most notable obesity treatment medications currently in use. These are suitable for Individuals who are unable to lose weight despite diet and exercise, have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or have a BMI above 27 and additional diseases (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, etc.):

1. Saxenda (Liraglutide)

Mechanism of Action: Saxenda contains a synthetic version of a natural hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). It acts on the appetite center in the brain, reducing feeling of hunger and increasing fullness.

Administration: Administered as once daily subcutaneous injection.

Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and redness at the injection site may occur.

2. Ozempic (Semaglutide)

Mechanism of Action: Similar to Saxenda, it is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It reduces appetite, slows stomach emptying, and increases the feeling of fullness.

Administration: Administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week.

Advantage: Convenient weekly administration.

Side Effects: Nausea, stomach discomfort, and diarrhea are the most common side effects.

Note: Although developed primarily for diabetes treatment, it has also been found effective for weight management.

3. Wegovy (Semaglutide – higher dose)

Mechanism of Action: It contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic, but it is a high-dose form specifically approved for weight loss.

Usage: One subcutaneous injection per week.

Effect: Clinical studies have shown that  when used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it can lead to an average weight loss of up to 15%.

Side Effects: Similarly, gastrointestinal complaints may occur.

4. Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

Mechanism of Action: It mimics both GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) hormones. This results in strong appetite-suppressing effect.

Administration: One subcutaneous injection per week.

Effect: Clinical studies have shown that it can lead to a high rate of weight loss.

Side Effects: Gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur.

Important Notes:

These drugs are not miracle solutions; they must be used in conjunction with a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

They may not be suitable for every patient. Their use may be contraindicated in individuals with certain conditions such as a history of thyroid cancer or pancreatitis.

The decision to use them must be made by a doctor, taking into account the individual's health status and needs. They are available in pharmacies only with a prescription.

The effectiveness and side effects of medications may vary from person to person. Regular follow-up is essential.

In conclusion, Saxenda, Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro are new generation Anti-Obesity medications offering effective options for obesity treatment. The most appropriate treatment is a personalized plan developed by a doctor, combining diet, exercise, and medication when necessary.
